Nothing compares to exploring Madison by foot, and in July there are plenty of races ranging from 5ks to marathons that’ll have you lacing up your shoes. The Boom Boom Triathlon on July 4th is a great way to celebrate the holiday and get a chance to cool off during the swimming portion. Held in nearby Mt. Horeb, it’s also an avenue for checking out a lesser known part of the metro area.
The FANS 5k run on July 8th is a quick and dirty dash just a few miles away in Oregon, WI. Perfect for new runners or for those simply looking to squeeze in their personal 5k run while on vacation in a fun environment, this one also takes you out of the city and onto a course where you’ll be immersed in the beauty of a Wisconsin summer.
Mark your calendars for July 29th and check out the WaunaFest Run, which offers a 10k or 5k option along with a one-mile kid’s run. This family-friendly event is held in Waunakee and is a favorite for saying farewell to July and ushering in the last of summer. The post-run food is also legendary and local.
The Isthmus Paddle and Portage is one of Madison’s few duathlons, slated for July 30th in Madison proper. With a perfect balance of heating up and cooling down, you get a double whammy of fun and fitness. Sign up early, or simply show up and root on the athletes.
