Visit Madison’s Only Ethiopian Restaurant

 

It’s shocking that in a foodie town like Madison, there’s only one Ethiopian restaurant—and that means the menu has to be amazing. At Buraka, you get a taste of the real deal along with a full bar and special Fish Fry Friday where two succulent cuts of cod are spiked in a beer batter and served alongside the famous house sauce over lentil and rice pilaf with spicy sweet potato fries on the side.

Lunch specials always draw a crowd, with all entrees served over your choice of rice or the famed Ethiopian “injera” bread. Open for lunch and dinner, it’ll take a few trips to this establishment to try everything that tempts you. Start with the small plates of duck wonton featuring duck bacon and charred sweet corn, samosas (meat or veggie) and tostones (deep fried plantains).

Known for their coconut curry chicken, minced beef, begwot (lamb and carrots) as well as misirwot (a beloved vegetarian dish), it’s difficult to make a wrong choice. Try the tibs firfir, an amazing dish featuring tender pieces of your choice of protein with minced injera and a house sauce.

You’ll always want to save room for dessert, like the orange dream shortcake, mango passion fruit cheesecake, chocolate mousse cake or bananas foster ice cream cake. They all pair perfectly with one of the house cocktails like the Buraka Breeze with mango rum or the house iced tea.
